  22. the disease of alcoholism.

  26. ANSWER:  Experts name alcoholism as the single biggest medical problem facing
  27. our nation today.  Nearly 18 million adults in this country are problem
  28. drinkers, and 10 million of them can be considered alcoholics.  Alcohol is a
  29. factor in nearly half of all murders, suicides, and accidental deaths.
  30. Alcohol claims at least 100,000 lives a year--25 times as many as all illegal
  31. drugs combined.
  32.      The cost of treatment for alcoholism and related disorders is nearly 15
  33. percent of the national health bill, about $117 billion a year.
  34.      There is controversy over whether alcoholism is a disease or a behavioral
  35. problem, and emerging evidence suggest that a genetic factor may be involved.
  36. Regardless, there is no question that alcohol can damage the liver, brain,
  37. stomach and heart.  In most cases, the more alcohol consumed, the greater the
  38. damage.  Alcohol is also suspected of causing breast cancer in women, although
  39. this has yet to be proved.
  40.      There is agreement that alcoholism should be treated, but confusion about
  41. the best approach.  Studies show no clear-cut advantage to inpatient versus
  42. outpatient programs, residential or nonresident settings, longer versus
  43. shorter programs, intensive or less intensive methods.
  44.      Alcoholics Anonymous strongly advocates total abstinence and maintains
  45. that an alcoholic is never cured, only controlled--and AA has helped more
  46. alcoholics than any other treatment program.
  47.      The outcome of treatment is difficult to evaluate, but most patients who
  48. are likely to do well have jobs, stable families, no history of past treatment
  49. failures, minimal involvement with other drugs, and minimal mental health
  50. problems.
  51.      Although some programs use sedatives, most experts believe that
  52. alcoholics can be helped with counseling alone.
  53.      Education, psychotherapy, relaxation training, vocational counseling,
  54. family support and antidepressant therapy all play a part in inpatient
  55. programs, and there are now more than 1,000 treatment centers in the U.S.  In
  56. addition, hundreds of thousands of friends and families of alcoholics have
  57. turned to Al-Anon and other family-therapy organizations to help them cope
  58. with this problem in their lives.
  59.      Even though every state in the country has raised the legal drinking age
  60. to 21, drinking among teenagers persists; studies show that two out of three
  61. high school seniors have drunk alcohol in the past month, and about 5 percent
  62. drink daily.  One in four families have had alcohol-related problems.
  63.      Experts are not optimistic that there will ever be a cure for alcoholism.
  64. But they agree that psychological and emotional supports, like those offered
  65. by Alcoholics Anonymous, will always be instrumental in controlling the
  66. problem.
  67.      The future may include drugs that block the craving for alcohol the way
  68. methadone supplants heroin.  The currently available medicine Antabuse works
  69. only in the most highly motivated patients.
  70.      Medical professionals believe that any treatment is better than no
  71. treatment.  Because early intervention leads to the highest success rate, it
  72. is important not only to seek help, but to pursue it as soon as an
  73. alcohol-related problem is suspected.
